Barbara (Meehan) Russell

Barbara (Meehan) Russell passed away peacefully at home surrounded by the love of her family on Friday, July 29, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara, fondly known as Bobbie, Honey, Mom, and Nana, was born in New York City in 1942 to Thomas and Bettye Meehan. The family moved several times and settled in Kensington, MD where she graduated as an Honor Society student of Walter Johnson High School and went on to attend the University of Maryland. In her young adult years, Barbara spent time travelling in Europe and worked as an editor at Planning Research. She met the love of her life, Warren Russell, in Washington, DC and married in 1967. The couple and their two daughters moved to Glastonbury, CT in 1970. They enjoyed nearly 55 joyous years together raising a family, spending time with family and friends, travelling, and ultimately retiring in Sarasota, FL. Barbara was an avid reader with a keen interest in history, having just recently successfully completed an online history course. Barbara reveled in watching the wildlife that frequents the lake behind their house, particularly the sand hill cranes and their offspring. She also loved her many cats over the years and all their silly antics. Barbara possessed many creative talents. She was a brilliant knitter, sewer, and jewelry maker, designing without the guide of a pattern. She was an Art Guild member and spent time working with oil paints and sketching portraits. Barbara was athletically inclined and enjoyed a life-long commitment to the gym, always pushing herself physically. She maintained her yoga practice and daily walks until very recently. Cape Cod vacations included morning swims across the lake with Warren following by boat to ensure she made it back safely. Barbara spent years golfing with her husband and friends and was Chairman of numerous Glastonbury Hills Country Club Committee events. Barbara was an active Garden Club member for many years and her green thumb was evident in her vibrant gardens in both Glastonbury and Sarasota. Barbara was a beautiful singer similar to her daughter, Debbie. She enjoyed playing bridge, but mostly the conversations and laughs that ensued with her friends. Barbara’s fondest moments were times spent with her beloved family whom she fiercely supported in all their endeavors. Barbara is survived by her dearest and devoted husband, Warren; daughter, Christine Korper (David) of Glastonbury; loving grandchildren, Emily and Owen Korper; brother, Greg Meehan of Wisconsin; and niece, Ann Meehan of Minnesota. Her daughter, Deborah Abosheta of New York, predeceased Barbara. Memorial services will be announced at a future date. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make donations to your local Humane Society.
