Michael John Normile

In the company of his family, Michael J. Normile passed away on May 17th in Sarasota, Florida after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Michael is survived by his wife of 43 years, Eileen Walsh Normile, and his beloved daughters, Madeline Normile Malachowski and Catherine Normile; his sons-in-law Daniel Malachowski and Matthew Solomon; and his very special grandson, Hayes Michael Malachowski. Michael was born in Philadelphia, Pa. to Elisabeth Abel and John Normile. He spent his teenage years playing rhythm guitar in a rock ‘n’ roll band, which sparked a lifelong love of music. Michael received a degree in Economics from Fordham University in New York, where he met his wife at the college radio station. During his career in banking he rose to positions of Director and Managing Director for three premier Wall Street investment banks: Salomon Brothers, Merrill Lynch, and HSBC. Michael’s career provided opportunities for his family to live not just in the New York City area but also in Hong Kong and London. Following his retirement, he moved to Sarasota in 2008. Michael loved the City of Sarasota and served for years on the Board of Directors of the Downtown Sarasota Condominium Association providing thoughtful analysis of issues and suggestions for improvements for the City’s downtown residents. He also had an educated fascination with international politics, with a particular interest in the Middle East. Michael was an avid outdoorsman and expert shot who especially enjoyed skeet shooting and the friendly competition that comes with it. His discipline and physical toughness manifested in his hobbies—whether in a deer blind in the Pennsylvania wilderness at 4am, or during his regular gym workouts, typically two hours a day, every day. He was funny, smart, and a captivating storyteller; adored his dog, Paisley; and will always be remembered for being a gentleman. More than anything, Michael loved his family. In addition to his immediate family, Michael is survived by his sisters, Lorraine Boyadjis and Karen Wattiker and his brothers, Robert Normile and Lawrence Normile. A celebration of Michael’s life is planned for June 22nd at the Sarasota Yacht Club.
