Thomas Charles Leonard, Jr

Thomas Charles Leonard Jr, age 74, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, January 6, 2019. He was born on February 12, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Thomas C. Leonard Sr and the late Florence R. Leonard. He attended Kent State, Case Western Reserve and the University of South Florida, with a minor degree in Mechanical Engineering and B. S. degree in Criminal Justice. He was a longtime resident of Sarasota, FL for almost 43 years. Thomas worked as a Deputy Sheriff with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department, for 32 years, retiring in March, 2009. He held several roles over those 32 years as Deputy, Detective and one of the first School Resource Officers. Thomas is survived by his wife of 30 years, Doreen Mackay Leonard ; 3 daughters, Mechele Leonard, Victoria Cross (Eric) and Stephanie Leonard; 3 grandchildren, Heather Wilhelm (Kyle), Alexander King and Dana Habedank. 3 great-grandchildren Savana Wilhelm, Kai Wilhelm and Koa Wilhelm. A nephew, Christian Leonard (Meg) and a niece, Emily Leonard Parks PhD (William) of his brother, the late David C. Leonard PhD and Linda Leonard. A sister-in-law, Kathleen Jones (William), brother-in-law, Robert Mackay and mother-in-law, Eleanor Mackay, nephew-in-law Dennis Spensley (Suzanne) and a niece-in-law Lauri Genereau (Dion). and other loving relatives. He was predeceased by a son, Sean Thomas Leonard and a daughter, Jessica Lynn Leonard. He enjoyed participating in the National Marksman competitions, becoming the No. 2 Marksman in the country at the time, among several other shooting competions with the Sarasota County Sheriffs Marksman team. Also, he received the State of Florida Governor's 20 award, maintained for 10 years straight, 2000-2010, in recognition for his outstanding achievement in police combat competition during the Florida Police Combat League. Thomas was married in and attended as a member of Ascension Luthern church. In his spare time he enjoyed rebuilding classic cars and spending time with friends, especially watching movies. He had a very kind heart and quick wit and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Viewing will be at Toale Brothers - Colonial Chapel, on Thursday, January 10, 2019 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Additional viewing will be on Friday, January 11, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. until funeral service begins. The family will be there to greet relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at Toale Brothers - Colonial Chapel, on January 11, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Burial service will be held at Sarasota Memorial Park on January 11, 2019 at 1:00 p.m.
