Alvin A. Saxonbert

Alvin Aaron Saxonberg, age 91, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away on May 8th, 2017 in Sarasota. Al was born on June 9th, 1925 to Robert and Estelle Saxonberg in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1943, going on to serve his country in the waning months of WWII. After returning home he earned a degree in Business from Roosevelt College in Chicago, Illinois where he met his first wife Barbara and started his family. Al spent the first half of his life as Al Sax, building a highly successful tire and auto repair business in Chicago and Northwest Indiana, catering to the automotive needs of his loyal local clientele and regular Chicago notables like George Shearing, Billy Williams and Muddy Waters. Al set a positive example for all who knew him in the way he respected others and in his generous charitable spirit. Al was well known among his friends and relatives for his good humor and story-telling, and it can be said, without a doubt, that he lived life to the fullest. Al delighted in time spent with his many friends and family; enjoying Sarasota's opera and ballet scene with his wife Beverly, fishing with his children and grandchildren, jamming on his keyboard, playing golf and relishing his Sunday morning billiards with his buddies. Al was preceded in death by his first wife Adele Barbara Saxonberg, his sisters Marion Markovitz and Adele Furman and his first cousin and lifelong confidant Allen Wolf. Al is survived by his loving wife of 36 years Beverly Saxonberg, his two children Mark Saxonberg and Cheryl Kargher, his three step children Bonnie Coker, Jay Ackerman and Joy Mintz, his grandchildren Alex Kargher, Lauren Szczurowski, Sara Saxonberg, Jordan Saxonberg, Jack Champion, Megan Ackerman, Jake Ackerman, Tamir Mintz and Brittany Mintz, his great grandchildren Benjamin Szczurowski and Shoshana Kargher and his always loyal canine friend Princess. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the 2017 Suncoast Heart Walk for the benefit of the American Heart Association, GSASuncoast@heart.org. Condolences may be left in the Toale Brothers online guestbook at www.toalebrothers.com. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all of Al's friends and family who visited and kept him company in his last weeks at hospice. Condolences will be received at the Saxonberg residence, 464 Golden Gate Point, Sarasota FL 34236 on Thursday and Friday evenings (5/11 and 5/12) between the hours of 7PM and 9PM. A funeral service will be held at Temple Beth Shalom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota FL 34237 on Thursday May 11th beginning at 11:30AM with Rabbi Michael Werbow of Temple Beth Shalom officiating. Burial/Interment will follow at Beth Shalom Cemetery, 901 Circus Blvd, Sarasota FL 34232. Toale Brothers Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.
