Edward W. Edinger

Edward W. Edinger of Lakewood Ranch, FL passed away peacefully on September 17, 2021 at the age of 97. Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1923. He married Margaret Trapp (deceased) in 1944. They were married for 67 years. Ed is survived by his two daughters, Margie Lawhon (and her husband Dave) and Kathy Strolle (and her husband Fred); 4 grandchildren, Candace, Melissa, Meredith and Mark; and 8 great-grandchildren, Matthew, Sienna, Jillian, Julian, Charlie, CJ, Leo and Sophia. Ed was a proud veteran of World War II. Shortly after graduating from La Salle College High School in Philadelphia, he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He married Marge in 1944 in Ozark, AL before being shipped overseas to the island of Luzon, the Philippines. When the Japanese surrendered in 1945, Ed was among the first occupation troops sent to Tokyo, Japan. There, he served as a prison guard at Sugamo Prison, where many notable Japanese war criminals such as General Tojo, General Homma and Tokyo Rose were housed awaiting trial. Upon discharge from the Army, Ed and Marge lived in Philadelphia and later moved to Audubon, PA. Ed worked for General Electric Missile & Space Division for 32 years as a Quality Control Planner making missiles and communications satellites for the U.S. Government. In 1998, Ed and Marge moved to Sarasota, FL, where they lived until Marge's death in 2011. At that time, Ed moved to an assisted living facility in Lakewood Ranch, where he enjoyed numerous activities and made many wonderful friends, including his “guardian angels” Michael and Madelyn Mirwald. Ed was a kind, generous person with a quick wit and keen sense of humor. He had an amazing football mind and was a life-long Philadelphia Eagles fan. A military funeral will take place at the Sarasota National Cemetery on State Route 72 (Clark Road) at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 7, 2021. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in the name of Edward W. Edinger to the Honor Flight Network, Box L-4016, Columbus, OH 43260-4016.
