Edward J. Ryan, DDS

On Monday, July 19, 2021, Edward J. Ryan DDS, MS of Chicago, Illinois and Longboat Key, Florida, loving husband, father, brother and friend, passed away at the age of 81, in Sarasota, Florida Edward was born on May 27, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph W. and Mary H. (Burns) Ryan. In October 1959 he married the love of his life Rosemary Janine Maranto, his wife of 62 years. He received a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Masters of Science (MS) from Loyola University, Chicago in 1965 and after his years of service in the Navy, he received his specialty training in periodontics and practiced in Palatine and Crystal Lake, Illinois until he retired in 2001. Edward is survived by his loving wife Rosemary, his children, Janet (John) Anderson, Joseph (Holly) Ryan, Edward Ryan Jr., Mary (Mark) Wager, and Carolyn Ryan, his 15 grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Helen (Ryan) Elias, his sister-in-law, Tecla (Edward) Moran, his nieces, nephew and many cousins. Ed loved his grandchildren greatly and enjoyed every minute he spent with them, John (Kaila) Anderson, Keely Anderson, Casey (Max) Leiby, Jillian Anderson, Nolan Anderson, Patrick Ryan, Michael Ryan, Joseph Ryan, Sarah Ryan, Joseph (Ashley) Wager, Timothy (Marleen) Wager, Katelyn (Dustin) Mangan, Haley Hughes, Hannah Hughes, Cassidy Hughes and great grandchildren Emma Wager and Oliver Hanson. Ed began to vacation with his family on Longboat Key in the 1970s. His love for the beach and the Gulf of Mexico led Ed and Rosemary to purchasing a condo at the Castilian in 1980. In retirement, Ed and Rosemary would spend their winters on Longboat Key. Ed could be found setting up camp on the beach wearing a U.S. Navy ball cap with a thick white slather of sunblock on his nose. He would regularly hold court on issues facing the condo in the pool with his friends and neighbors. He would regale his grandchildren with tales of pirates and gold doubloons. For decades, Ed would dress as the Easter Bunny and walk the beach to Casa Del Mar to entertain the vacationing children. Ed took great pride that five generations of his family knew “which way to the beach” on Longboat Key. Ed was a guardian for his family and willingly took his seat at the helm of the ship. His guidance influenced and encouraged the younger generation of his family to be their best selves. He reinforced the importance of education and hard work. He’d motivate from a distance by mailing notes and newspaper clippings. He was a problem solver and shouldered the burdens of so many. Ed spent a lifetime travelling the world and connecting with the people along his journey. He understood the importance of shaking hands, sharing a life story, and bonding over a great meal. As a result, Ed always had a connection for you to contact no matter where you were headed. He’d insist that you make contact and the moment you’d say “Dr. Ryan sent me” the person would immediately gush with reverence. This experience is universal for all that knew him. People loved the man everywhere he went. He will be missed by so many. Ed’s family is contemplating plans for services and will notify those interested soon as plans are decided.
