Elizabeth Koenig

With heavy hearts and much sadness we share that our beautiful, kind, and loving mother Elizabeth passed from this world on April 17, 2024. Loving wife of Lt. Col. (retired) William A. Koenig (predeceased 2015) and George Franklin Hoke (predeceased 1994), cherished mother of Darrell F. Hoke (Monique), Kelly A. Bradley (Kendall), and Adrian L. Degiosafatto. Deeply treasured Grandma of Josh Munroe (Jennyfer), Levi Munroe (Nikki), Brieanna Munroe, Trevor Bradley, 1LT Taylor Bradley and her great-grandchildren Josie, Julian and Eira. "Wonderful" was the last word our mom whispered before she quietly slipped from this world. That word, we would have to say, best describes our mother. She was ‘wonderful’ and the kindest person we have ever known. Everyone who met her said, "she is so sweet." She raised all three of us with elegant love, kindness and never a cross word. Mom brightened everyone’s day with her optimism, beauty, grace, and welcoming spirit. Born in Sutton, Ontario, Canada, as a young girl and through her teen years Elizabeth’s parents (Howard and Lillian Wood) owned and operated Rabbit Nose Lodge in the wilds of Temagami, Ontario. She was raised and worked at the family lodge until she met our father, George (Hoke). Living their dreams our mom and dad moved from Canada to West Virginia, Virginia and then Connecticut. Upon retiring they opened the Lamb's Ear Inn Bed and Breakfast in Southwest Harbor, Maine. It was world renowned and a delightful success. Elizabeth was a loving wife to our father and gently cared for him through his final days. Time of course changes all things and years passed. Our widowed mother’s loneliness was filled to her delight with William (Koenig), the love of her life and her second husband—then life was bound to new adventures. Building a home and retiring to Saint Augustine Florida, Elizabeth’s days were filled with beautiful beach walks, friends, art, and poetry. She was proud to have studied for and received her U.S. citizenship in 2007. Bountiful with family and friends and years of true love, William and Elizabeth set sails for yet another journey, moving to Venice Florida. There she enjoyed the company of family and many close friends and neighbors whom she loved dearly. For the past six months, Mom’s home was Tuscan Gardens. With sincerity and gratitude, we want to thank her friends who brought her much joy and the staff that helped care for her. Their kindness was a testament to their love for her. Elizabeth was a strong Christian with close ties to the church, and always helped out when she was able.
