Gary Zoerner

Gary Zoerner, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, at the age of 69, in the loving embrace of his family. Gary was born on August 27, 1956, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to the late Willard and Dorothy "Dottie" Zoerner. His life was a testament to faith, family, and service, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will forever be cherished. Gary graduated as Salutatorian from Elkhart High School in Elkhart, Illinois, showcasing his early dedication and drive. His pursuit of knowledge led him to Sagamon State University, where he earned a degree in Business Management, setting the stage for a rewarding career. Gary retired from Sarasota County Government, where he was affectionately known as "the Professor" during his 15-year tenure as an accounting clerk. A man of deep faith, Gary was a devout Christian whose life was characterized by his commitment to his church and community. He was a member of Cornland Community Church in Corland, Illinois, for many years before moving to Florida, where he met and married his beloved wife, Dawn, at Southside Christian Church. There, he served joyfully as a youth pastor and choir member. His faith journey led them to Peace Christian Fellowship Church in North Port for 22 years, and more recently, to Awaken Church, where Gary dedicated his time assisting shut-in and infirm members. His compassionate spirit also shone through his volunteer work with the "Rookie Dad's" program at Pregnancy Solutions. Gary's passion for Taekwondo earned him a black belt, a testament to his discipline and strength. He was an avid reader, a devoted fan and collector of Star Trek models, and loved nothing more than to share the Gospel with those around him. His voice could often be heard singing hymns, harmonizing with his family, a testament to the joy he found in music. Gary was preceded in death by his cherished parents, Bill and Dottie Zoerner. He is survived by his devoted wife of 28 years, Dawn, and his daughters, Mahri Lee (Eric Schlander) and Candice Stout (Jeremy). He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers, Ronald Zoerner (Teri) and William Micheal Zoerner, his sister, Pamela Ashby (Scott), and his faithful dogs, Xena and Dahlia, who brought him immense joy and companionship. Gary faced his battle with Multiple Myeloma with courage and grace, never losing faith or his compassionate spirit. A celebration of life service will be held to honor Gary's life at Awaken Church 390 Flamingo Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL 33954.
