James Mowat, III

James Mowat III of Venice, FL, son of the late Dorothy Bryant and James Mowat II, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Sunday, April 23, 2017, at the age of 82. He was predeceased by the two loves of his life – each with whom he made the world a brighter place – Dona Malloy of 44 years and Catherine Mugnai of 15 years. Jim will be missed by many for his kindness, wisdom, sense of humor, and prowess on the dance floor. His sparkling blue eyes, natural leadership, charm, and wit set him apart - along with his antics at the VFW. In his sister's eyes, "Sonny" was simply perfect. He will be remembered as a very good man who faithfully served veterans and also his nation in the US Navy and US Air Force in avionics and metrology, retiring as a SMSgt and again as a civilian. He earned many commendations, including the Bronze Star. He served as president of his union, commander of VFW Posts 2246 in Rome, NY, and 8118 in Venice, FL, and served in the Color Guard. Jim was active in numerous fraternal organizations in addition to being a Shriner, 32 degree Master Mason and member of the Scottish Rite for over 50 years. Born in Mexico, Maine, he lived throughout the U.S. and abroad, but primarily raised his girls in Rome, NY. He loved long drives, friends, playing cards, maple sugar, cheese, playing sports, volunteering at the VFW, Moxie, and recently hanging with friends at Teddy's After Dark. An avid reader of the Rumford Falls Times, he retired to the warmth of Venice while his heart remained in Maine. He was predeceased by two siblings Terry Mowat and Bonnie Dee Fircak, in-laws Tom McCusker and Mishael, Doris, and Loretta Malloy, and step-children DebbyLee Murch and John Maher. Jim is survived by many dear friends and his three girls: Heather Mowat (Richard Sherman) of New York, Jamie (Brian) Young of Connecticut, and Heidi (Joseph) Povinelli of North Carolina; stepdaughter: CindyLee (Ray) Thurston of Maine; five grandsons: Patrick James Povinelli, Joey Attilio Povinelli, James Mowat Young, Thomas Michael Young, and Ian Patrick Young; siblings: Patricia McCusker and Kirk (Barbara) Mowat; in-laws: Ginny Mowat, Patricia (Roaldo) Percoco, Betty Mugnai, and Alexander (Kathy) Mugnai; stepchildren: Mike (Debbie) Maher, Kathy (Mike) Armes, and Steve (Cheryl) Maher; his Uncle Tommy (Delores) Mowat; and nieces and nephews, cousins, and step grand and great grandchildren. Funeral services with military honors will take place Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 11:00 am at Emmanuel Lutheran Church at 790 Tamiami Trail, Venice, presided by Gordy Sherven, MSgt (Ret) US Army. Burial with American Legion honors will take place Monday, May 22, 2017 at 11:00 am at Sarasota National Cemetery. Donations may be made in the memory of James Mowat III to the VFW National Veterans Services, VFW.org. Arrangements have been made through Ewing Chapel, Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Venice.
