John Thomas Haylett

John Thomas Haylett (1940 - 2024) John Thomas Haylett, a devoted Catholic husband, father, grandfather, and lifelong Atlanta Braves fan, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2024. Born on March 28, 1940, in Akron, Ohio, John lived a life full of love, purpose, and dedication to his family while enjoying the many things he accomplished and experienced throughout his life. John's journey began in Akron, where he later went on to attend Heidelberg University. There, he excelled not only in his studies, majoring in finance, but also on the football field. While at Heidelberg, he did score big by meeting the love of his life, Patsie (deceased 2015). They married in 1964 and together raised three beautiful children: Lisa, Carleen, and Jack. In 1974, the Haylett family moved to Sarasota, Florida, where John embarked on a successful career as the CFO for the City of Sarasota for many years. Following his retirement from the city, John and his wife founded John Haylett & Company, an investment banking company focused on municipal bonds. In addition to his business successes, John helped found a charity, Caritas. Caritas, which continues to operate today, is an outreach ministry helping thousands of Sarasota residents in acute financial need by providing aid in areas of utility payments, food, transportation, prescriptions, and work attire. John's dedication and kindness were evident in all his work, which brought him great fulfillment. Once John retired for good, he and Patsie followed their dream of owning a second home in the North Georgia mountains which brought them closer to their grandchildren. It spurred many family vacations to Calloway Gardens where John and Patsie had vacationed with their own children for many years when they were young. All the memories created at Calloway held a very special place in his heart. John and Patsie also had a passion for traveling through Europe where they spent a lot of time in their favorite country, Italy, indulging in delicious cuisine and incredible wines. In addition to spending time with his loved ones, John frequented the golf course where he formed many friendships and enjoyed the beautiful outdoors while trying to lower his handicap. Additionally, John was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. He never missed a Braves game whether it was on TV or when he had the opportunity to watch them live when visiting his son in Atlanta. His family will miss his texts and phone calls of elation and sorrows about the Braves performance throughout the season. John is survived by his daughters, Lisa and Carleen, and son, Jack. He also leaves behind cherished grandchildren, Edward & Thomas Pruett and Addison, Amelia, and John Haylett, all of whom will dearly miss their grandfather. John's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be missed tremendously by all that knew him. A celebration of life will be held on May 15th at the Church of St. Patrick, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Atlanta Braves Foundation.
