Lydia Mercedes Martin

Lydia Mercedes Martin peacefully gained her wings on Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the age of 78 in Sarasota, Florida after battling a chronic illness. Lydia was born in Belize City, Belize on May 30, 1945, the daughter of the late Francisco and Ines Perdomo Cervantes. She is survived by her two loving daughters, Patrice Jonathan and Dr Francene Martin, sons-in-law Keith Tanguay and Brian Jonathan. She is also survived by her three grandchildren Stephon Luke Jonathan, Giovanni Martin Tanguay and Isabella Mercedes Tanguay. Lydia is also survived by husband of 40+ years Phillip Lloyd Martin, brother Carlos Cervantes and sister Maria Elena Cervantes and many nieces and nephews. Finally, she is survived by her devoted loving caretaker Lita Cuellar who she lived with the last few years of her life. Lydia is predeceased by her sisters Chula Gabourel, Marta Ester Rodriguez and brothers Santiago and Francisco Cervantes. Lydia was a graduate of University of West Indies in Jamaica where she studied Spanish and Education. She was a teacher at St. Jago High School in Jamaica, St Catherine's Catholic High School in Belize City then retired at age 65 as a teacher from Cage Elementary in Houston, Texas. Lydia enjoyed watching movies, listening to all kinds of music, cooking and watching sports such as baseball and basketball. Often, she stayed up late watching playoff finals then calling her brothers and sisters in rivalry cities. While she resided in Webster, Texas for the majority of years in the US, Lydia later relocated to Sarasota, Florida in December 2018. Her deep faith and devotion to the Lord were a driving force in her life as well she instilled this in her family. Lydia truly treasured her family, friends and time spent with them. She will be missed by those lives she touched. Memorial service will be held Saturday, January 13th, 2024, at 1 pm at Incarnation Catholic Church, in Sarasota, Florida.
