Mary Jeter Traurig

Mary Jeter Traurig, January 3, 2017. She was the daughter of Edith Lauderbaugh and Capt. John T. Jeter, V, born in Dallas, PA, coming to Sarasota in 1990. She had previously lived as a winter resident in Bay Hill, Orlando, FL and Palm Aire Country Club. She had been a resident of Lake House West since 2014. Survivors include three children, James B. Davies, III, Penny P. Steck, and Frank E. Parkhurst, V; her husband of 26 beautiful loving years, Donald A. Traurig; five grandchildren, Libby Mica, Paige S. Jennings, Frank E. and Alexandra Parkhurst, and Dina Weitzman; six great grandchildren, Elan and Owen Mica, Gracie and Sophie Jennings, Jocelyn and Jason Weitzman. She was preceded in death by husbands, James Davies, Frank Parkhurst and Gordon Dietterick. Mary was a graduate of Wyoming Seminary, Kingston, PA, attended Mansfield University, Marywood College, Scranton, PA, and holds a Masters Degree, Sociology, from College Misericordia, Dallas, PA. She was Past Social Service Director at Valley Crest, Luzerne County Home, Wilkes Barre, PA, retiring after 23 years. She was the founder and editor of the Wilkes Barre Veterans Hospital newspaper, "The Coal Cracker", Past President and Board Member of the Wilkes Barre March of Dimes Association, Past President of Luzerne County Mental Health Association, named Board Member Emeritus, Past Vice-President of the Luzerne Mental Health Association, Past President of the Pennsylvania Mental Health Association, and Past President of the Wyoming Valley Hospital Auxilliary. She was the first President, Geisinger-Wyoming Valley Medical Center Women's Auxilliary, and honored by the Board of Directors of Step-by-Step, Inc. for her professional contribution, while a member of the Board. Mary was a past member of the Board of Directors of Sarasota Mental Health Organization, and Past President of the Sarasota Mental Health Organization Guild. She was a member and sustainer of the Wilkes Barre and the Sarasota Junior Leagues. A member of CAR and DAR, Wyoming, PA and the Sarasota Desoto Chapters. She was a member of the Wyoming Valley CC, Sea View CC, Atlantic City, NJ, the Bay Hill Golf and Country Club, Orlando, FL, Palm Aire Golf and Country Club, Sarasota, the Bird Key Yacht Club, and the Westmoreland Club, Wilkes Barre, PA. Graveside service will be private at Sarasota National Cemetery. There will be a Celebration of her Life at Lakehouse West on Saturday, January 21st at 2:30 PM. The family requests that donations in her memory be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238, or to the Shriners Childrens Hospital, 12502 USF Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.
