Nancie Papoutsis Haggar

Nancie Papoutsis Haggar, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and confidant to many, passed peacefully to her heavenly home on June 24, 2025, in Sarasota, FL. She was 93 years old. Nancie was born on January 22, 1932, in Chicago, IL, to Gust and Stella Papoutsis. At the age of 12, she moved with her family to Mitchell, SD, where they opened the Oriental Café and began a new life in the restaurant business. Nancie loved the restaurant business and later became the Manager at Courts Café in Mitchell for many years. Nancie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved playing cards, working on puzzles and crosswords, learning multiple languages, baking, cooking, entertaining and dancing! She was especially proud of her Greek heritage, speaking and writing Greek fluently. Few could dance the Greek Zeimbekiko as beautifully and gracefully like Nancie. She flourished with joy on the dance floor. Nancie was known for her generous and loving heart. She frequently gave of her time to care for sick friends and was a devoted volunteer at the annual Greek Orthodox Bake Sale in Sioux Falls. Later in life, Nancie’s personal relationship with Jesus deepened and became a guiding priority in her life. Her faith was a source of strength, and it shaped the way she lived. Her giving spirit was well known among family and friends, touching many with God’s love and grace. Above all, Nancie loved her family. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Grandma Yiayia,” were her pride and joy. Thankful for sharing in her life include her daughter, Jamie (Chris Van Vliet) Lakewood Ranch, FL, son Jim Weigand, Sioux Falls, SD, daughter Penny (Robert Ames), Omaha, NE, son Louis (Patty Chamales), El Paso, TX, and son Constantine (Ingrid)Chamales, Ft. Lewis, WA, She is also survived by10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, as well as relatives and friends. Nancie was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Haggar; her sister Fannie Karedis; and her brother Stanley Papoutsis. The family will hold a “Celebration of Life” service to honor the life and legacy of Nancie at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota on July 11, 2025 at 11 A.M. Reverend Lou Judd will officiate with burial at Skyway Memorial Gardens in Palmetto. Following the committal service, a luncheon for family will be held at the Riverhouse Waterfront Restaurant. Nancie left this world on June 24, 2025, at 5:45 A.M. and is now walking with Jesus. She was 93 years old. MAY HER MEMORY BE ETERNAL.
