Scott Daniel Smith

Scott Daniel Smith, 55, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Scott grew up in Columbus, IN and graduated from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business with Distinction in 1990. He began his career in Chicago with Continental Bank as an Analyst, joined Ziegler Securities in 1992 to run their Special Products Group, and lastly joined Cain Brothers in New York City in 1998. Scott was the head of Cain Brothers Capital Markets Group and member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. Scott was also the President of Cain Brothers Asset Management, LLC an affiliated institutional investment advisory firm. His banking focus was providing interest rate management products and solution-oriented reinvestment vehicles for the firm's clients. Under Scott’s leadership, the Special Products Group pioneered the use of several unique transaction structures. He successfully engineered over 1,500 transactions totaling over $35 billion. Scott and his team also developed an industry leading online financial risk management system. Scott treasured many friendships he developed throughout his life. He ingrained himself in the Sarasota community. He and his wife, Julie, were supporters of several local non-profits. He served on the board of the Out-of-Door Academy. Although Scott was proud of his career accomplishments, his family was his guiding light. There was nothing in this world that was more important to Scott than his family. They enjoyed traveling together, with his favorite destinations being Argentina, Spain, Italy and North Carolina. Scott enjoyed sports with his kids, particularly cheering on the Indianapolis Colts, Tampa Bay Lightning, Iowa Hawkeyes, Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Marlins, although his favorite teams were those his kids played on. His legacy will live on through his children. In their words… “Dad always had a plan and an answer for anything we needed, and he knew how to support each of us in our own way. I’ll always remember his drive and dedication to his family. He was also smart as a whip! He had the ability to explain any topic no matter how complicated. I’ll remember his selflessness. He would do anything for us and always brought out the best in our family. He knew how to do literally everything. He had useful knowledge about the most random things, and I’ve never met anyone like that. He could always find the good in just about everything.” Scott is survived by his wife, Julie Lang Smith of Sarasota, FL; sons Nicholas Smith of Noblesville, IN, Jacob Smith of New Orleans, LA, Chase Smith of Sarasota, FL and Drew Smith of Sarasota, FL; daughters Alexa DeBartolo of New York City, NY, and Ashley DeBartolo of Miami, FL; father Daniel and his wife Janyce Smith of Noblesville, IN; mother Jeanie and her husband Vance (deceased) Shipman of St. Petersburg, FL; sister Angela Smith of Miami, FL; brothers Bradley Smith of Largo, FL, John and Layla Risser of Fishers, IN, Jason and Charlotte Risser of St. Joseph, MI, Jeff Risser and Heather Martens of Cameron Park, CA, David Risser of Indianapolis, IN, and Sport and Gretchen Shipman of Bloomington, MN.
