Stephen John Miller

Stephen John Miller, beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and “Pop Pop”, passed away at the age of 89 on May 27, 2023, at his home in Sarasota, FL. Steve was born on September 19, 1933, in Philadelphia, PA, and was the son of the late Fred and Charlotte (MacDougall) Miller. Steve graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1951, where he met his wife, Doris (Duffy) (UD’52). They raised their family in King of Prussia, PA, before enjoying their retired years in Sarasota. The Millers recently celebrated 66 years of marriage in April, a milestone he was very proud of. Steve retired from Bell Telephone of Pennsylvania after 34 years and was a dedicated volunteer at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota. He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Sarasota and served in the US Army in San Antonio, TX. Steve enjoyed taking care of his properties by planting colorful flowers, trimming bushes to perfection, and keeping a flawlessly manicured lawn. He was the proud recipient of several Beautification Awards while living in Upper Merion township. He took great pleasure in whipping up a delicious meal, but rarely followed a recipe. He was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles. Steve loved spending summers with his family at their condo in Ocean City, NJ, and took his wife on a dream vacation to Switzerland in addition to 20 Caribbean cruises. He cherished the holidays with his family, especially at Christmas. One of his favorite memories was spent over many years riding on the King of Prussia firetruck through their Sweetbriar development, dressed as Santa Claus, handing out candy canes to all the kids. In addition to his wife, Steve is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Maiale and Barbara Tobin (James), grandson, Kyle Maiale (Samantha “Sam”), sister, Victoria Frederic, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Douglas Fredrick Miller, two sisters, Thelma Morris and Charlotte Miller, a niece, Kimberly Morris, and son-in-law, Thomas Maiale. The family would like to thank Steve and Doris’ neighbors for providing meals, transportation, errands, and their love and support for their parents. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date and will take place in Pennsylvania in the fall.
