Thomas Francis Lucas, III

Thomas Francis Lucas III, 80, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan 16th, 2018 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Born in Des Moines, Iowa to Thomas F Lucas II and Gladys Lucas, Tom spent his childhood in Des Moines where he met Carol Ann McKinley during his senior year at Roosevelt High School. Tom and Carol were married in Des Moines in 1957, and spent 31 years together before Carol's death from cancer in 1988. Tom met Patricia Irene Figlow, of Sarasota, Florida the following year and they were married shortly after. Patricia died in 2014. Tom spent most of his adult life working for the jeanswear division of Levi Strauss & Co, holding positions of increasing responsibility in Des Moines, Iowa; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; St Louis, Missouri; Atlanta, Georgia; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Sarasota, Florida. He retired in 2001, and spent the rest of his life traveling, attending art shows and charitable benefits, and reading. He was particularly fond of spending time with his children: Thomas Lucas IV and his wife Leslie Kiliper, of Charlotte, NC; Tara Ruck and her husband Tom Ruck, of St Louis, MO; and Tracy Lucas-Oronzio and her husband Mark Oronzio of Portland, OR. He also loved his grand-children; Evan Lucas of Rock Hill, SC; Madeline Lucas Tolliver and her husband KD Tolliver of Cleveland, OH; Christopher Ruck of Tempe, AZ; and Kevin Ruck of St Louis, MO. In addition, Tom loved and enjoyed spending time with Patricia's daughter Cathy Haitz, of Sarasota, FL, and her children: Richard Haitz of Los Angeles, CA; Heather Haitz of Tampa, FL; Sean Haitz of Los Angeles, CA; and Grace Haitz of Sarasota, FL. Tom was also blessed with one great grandchild: Zoey Jane Valere, of St Louis, MO. Tom was pre-deceased by his parents and a brother, Richard Lucas, of Des Moines Iowa. He is survived by his sister, Rhea Workman, of Apache Junction, AZ. Tom's children will receive friends and family for a celebration of Tom's life on Saturday, January 20th, 2018, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Toale Brothers Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Avenue, Sarasota, Florida 34236. Memorial donations may be made in Tom's name to The Red Tab Foundation, Levi's Plaza, 1155 Battery St., San Francisco, CA 94111.
