Dorothy (Dottie) Fenelon Flattery

Dorothy (Dottie) Fenelon Flattery passed away peacefully, at home in Sarasota, Florida on July 19, 2024. Born in New York City on January 28, 1937, to Emily and William Fenelon, Dottie grew up in Manhattan with her brother William (Bill) and sister Dolly. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College and married her sweetheart, Paul Charles Flattery of Queens, NY on August 1, 1959, after Paul finished at the University of Notre Dame. Dottie and Paul moved across the country from TwentyNine Palms, California to Arlington, Virginia as Paul finished his Marine Corps obligation and pursued his Law Degree. Dottie managed their family of 5 boys when they moved to Hastings-On-Hudson, New York and ultimately settled in Deerfield, Illinois. As a mom, homemaker, school nurse and real estate agent, Dottie was beloved by the community, friends and family. She was kind, generous, humorous, extremely caring and the family’s guiding light. While living in Deerfield, Dottie and Paul were active members of the Chicago Curling Club. Upon retirement Dottie knew that Florida was their destination and University Park became their chosen community. She and Paul were avid travelers taking many trips with the University of Notre Dame Alumni travel groups, and with brother Bill and sister-in-law Jacque. When they weren’t overseas, or visiting their six grandchildren, Dottie was volunteering with Meals-On-Wheels. She was the President of the Ladies 9 Hole Golf Association at UPCC and participated in many other groups within the community. Dottie was a faithful parishioner of St. Jude Catholic Church. She supported many groups in the Sarasota area, including The Friendship Center, Resurrection House, Seasons of Sharing and Meals-on-Wheels of Manatee and Sarasota Counties. Dottie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was the family touchstone who will be greatly missed by many, and always remembered with the greatest love and appreciation by her sons Paul Jr. (Leslie), Kevin, P.J. (Michelle), and Steve, her grandchildren Caitlin (Erin Bailey), Erin, Neil, John (Ryleigh), Tom and Cassidy and her brother Bill (Jacque). She is preceded in death by her husband Paul and their son Bill. Interment will be at the Sarasota National Cemetery at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Meal-on-Wheels are encouraged.
