Frederick MacDonald Wiedorn was born in Waterbury, CT and spent a good part of his life in that city, which was always close to his heart. After high school, he joined the Army Air Corps where he trained as a pilot for WWII and worked as a flight engineer. He eventually returned to Waterbury as an elementary school teacher. There he built a house for Gladys, his new bride, and her three children. He was the president of the local teachers' organization and pushed hard for better schools. Eventually, he and Gladys joined her family in Florida. Together with the family they purchased and ran the Osprey Trailer Park and ARC Resort in Gibsonton. In Florida, Fred changed professions to become a real estate appraiser. Following his retirement he and his wife Gladys traveled the world. Political, social and environmental causes filled his time, including volunteering at Oscar Sherer State Park and Habitat for Humanity. Lighter interests included tennis, family parties, theater (especially FST), international dancing, computer and investment clubs and bridge. He enjoyed sharing his Scottish heritage through Scottish dancing and club activities. Fred also enjoyed fitness and exercised daily into his 90s. The most important thing in life to Fred was his loving wife Gladys. He was devoted to her throughout her life. Though she preceded him in death he cherished her everyday of his life. He is survived by Gladys's children Judy Drake, Doug Robins and Carolyn Robins, her grandchildren Terry and Tony Drake, Great Grand-child Blue Waters and Great-Great Grandchildren Milo and Killian. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Clare and several nieces and nephews. Fred repeatedly boasted during his last years that he had lived a good life. His last request was that people would not be sad, instead remaining joyous in their memories of their time with him. A celebration of life will be held sometime later this year. he and his beloved Gladys will be interred in the National Cemetery in Sarasota. Condolences can be sent to the family at 1905 Marilyn Avenue, Bradenton, FL 34207. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the environmental cause of your choice or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
