George Thomas Abernathy, M.D. passed away Thursday February 17, 2022. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was the son of the late Ira R. Abernathy and the late Stella E. Moore Abernathy. Dr. Abernathy attended Emory College from 1960 to 1964 where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He then attended Emory Medical School from 1964 to 1968 where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine. Dr. Abernathy served his internship in Straight Medicine at both Emory and Grady Hospitals in Atlanta in 1968. He served his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals from 1971 to 1973 and Fellowship Cardiology at Emory University from 1973 to 1975 where he was selected for Chief Residency of Medicine and entered private practice instead. He began his private practice in Noninvasive Diagnostic Cardiology in Florida in 1975 where he practiced for 30 years on the West Coast of Florida. Dr. Abernathy served his country as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Thailand from 1969 to 1971; the United States Air Force Major Chief of Cardiology from 1978 to 1982; the U.S. Air Force Chief of Cardiology and Hospital Services in West Germany from 1982 to 1985; U.S. Air Force Chief of Cardiology, Internal Medicine, Hospital Services in San Antonio, Texas from 1985 to 1986. He was a born-again evangelical Christian and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and patients. A graveside service will be held at 9:30 AM Wednesday March 9, 2022, at Sarasota National Cemetery.
