On May 21st, Jane Fergusson Griffin, a former Providence based Epidemiologist and Associate Professor at Brown University, died at the age of 69 surrounded by her family in Sarasota, Florida. Jane was a passionate person who cared deeply about everything she did and shared her kindness, generous spirit, and humor freely with all who knew her. Through her many interests which included birds, golf and photography she showed her joy, compassion, creativity and intelligence. A prize winning poet, Jane captured moments with honesty and grace. She was an advocate for the health rights of the underserved with a strong moral compass. Born on September 12, 1951 in Boston MA, Jane grew up in Bryn Mawr, PA graduating from Harriton High School in 1969. She went on to receive her BA in Medical Anthropology from Brown University and her MA in Public Health/Epidemiology from Yale University. She started a successful consulting company in Rhode Island, MCH Evaluation, conducting and publishing studies in the field of Maternal and Child Health. Jane raised her son, Brock in Providence, RI and then called many places home with husband, Pat: Barrington, RI, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, Prince Edward Island, Canada and Sarasota, FL. A much loved mentor to generations of family, friends and employees, Jane loved fully and was loved by many. She is survived by her husband, Patrick Griffin, her son, Brock deChristopher, her step-son, Keith Griffin (Gina), her siblings, Nancy Tarquinio (Al), Bill Fergusson (Barb), Betsy Platt (Ethan), Stan Fergusson (Linda), Kate James (Ben), and her inlaws, Joan Januskowski (Konrad) and Keith Griffin (Marilyn). Jane was especially close with her nieces and nephews and will be fondly remembered by them all: Chris Fergusson (Katie), Meghan Fergusson (Flora Lichtman), Sam Platt (Kerry Lee), Charlie Platt (Miranda), Will James, Ted James, Tania Januskowski, Collen Hammer, Cori Januskoswski, Christoper Griffin and many grand nieces and nephews with one recent namesake, Jane Frances Fergusson Lichtman.
