    Jane Pfeiffenberger Luer

    April 22, 1922 - December 8, 2021

Jane Pfeiffenberger Luer passed away peacefully at age 99 on Wednesday, December 8, 2021. Jane was born in Alton, Illinois, on April 22, 1922, the daughter of James Mather Pfeiffenberger and Ethel Hortense Rodgers Pfeiffenberger. She was educated at Mary Institute in St. Louis, and Wheaton College in Norton, MA. Jane is preceded in death by her husband, Carlyle Luer, to whom she was married for 74 years, and six siblings, sisters Ella Anschuetz and Mary pfeiffenberger, and brothers Mather, Lucas, Andrew, and Franklin Pfeiffenberger. Jane and Carlyle were married on June 23, 1945, followed by a fourteen-month military assignment in Europe, stationed in Linz, Austria, and Carlyle’s surgical residency from Washington University School of Medicine, in St. Louis. Jane and Carlyle moved to Sarasota in 1953, where Carlyle established his medical practice. Jane was a loving wife and a devoted mother, always placing the needs of others before her own. In addition to raising five children, Jane shared Carlyle’s love of nature and accompanied him through countless excursions through the swamps of Florida, jungles of Ecuador and Colombia, and mountains of Peru and Bolivia in search of orchids. Even though these treks often included going days without seeing a bed or proper lavatory, Jane never left her husband’s side. They did everything together. Jane had a lifelong love of music and regularly attended Florida West Coast Symphony concerts. Jane was active in the community through numerous organizations, including the Symphony Women’s Association (later the Women’s Exchange), La Musica Di Asolo, Friends of the Gardens ~ Selby Associates, Sarasota Garden Club, Sarasota Orchid Society, and Sarasota County Medical Society Alliance. Jane is survived by a daughter, Ann Skipper (J Ronald) of Sarasota, and sons Carl (Rosa) of Sarasota, William (Melissa) of New Orleans, George of Boynton Beach, and Albert (Cassie) of Melbourne, Florida. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Cynthia Gries, James Skipper, Jane Cunetta, and Christopher, Amy, Dustin, Alexander, Katherine, Eric, Sara, Andrew, and William Luer, as well as 11 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Event Center on Saturday, January 15 at 2pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
