June 9, 2022
It is with deep sadness that the family of Sarantos J. Yeostros MD, announces his passing on June 9, 2022 at 89 years of age at his home in Sarasota, Florida. He was surrounded by his devoted wife, Maureen, and his three adoring daughters, Allayne, Amy, and Janine, when he took his final breath. Sarantos was a first-generation Greek American born to Yiannis (John) and Panagiota (nee Sarantakos) Yeostros in Buffalo, New York. He often recounted fondly stories of his youth working at the family business, Yeostros Ice Cream Co. on Broadway Avenue in Buffalo. Despite losing his father at a young age, Sarantos excelled academically. At the age of 16, he graduated from Kensington High School and began his studies at the University of Buffalo where he ultimately obtained a degree in medicine. He went on to complete specialty training in Rheumatology at the University of Pennsylvania. A dedicated and brilliant physician, Dr. Yeostros’ decades-long career began at the Millard Fillmore Hospital where he met his future wife, Maureen, a registered nurse. He maintained private practices in Buffalo and later in Sarasota. He also served as a physician in the US Army at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas where he achieved the rank of colonel. After his retirement, he donated his time as a volunteer physician at the Senior Friendship Center in Sarasota. Sarantos had many talents and interests. He was an artist, pianist, gardener, and chef. He also had a love for animals and derived great joy from them. His happiest moments, however, were spent with family and friends. Sarantos will be profoundly missed but will always be remembered for his kindness, intellect, humor, infectious laugh and smile. Dr. Yeostros is survived by his wife Maureen (nee Janiak), daughters Allayne, Amy and Janine (Paul) and nephew John (Mary) and grandniece Eleni. No prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to a funeral liturgy on Saturday, June 18th, 2022 at 10:00am at the Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation (146 W. Utica Street (at Delaware Ave.) The family requests that all who plan to attend wear a mask during the entire service. Masks will be available at the church if needed.
