Alice Shaw Penington

Alice Shaw Penington, 92, of Sarasota, FL. passed away on October 17, 2017. She was born to Emmett and Gertrude Shaw in Shreveport, Louisiana on January 22, 1925. She is also predeceased by her brother Emmett Shaw, Jr. After attending LSU, Alice met and married the love of her life John Raymond Penington, Sr. As a proud Air force wife Alice was an expert at moving frequently and creating a stylish home for her family no matter where the assignment. For 65 years Alice and John's devotion to each other was an inspiration to many. Theirs was a true love story. Loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend Alice loved helping others. Her extensive volunteering included earning over 5,000 hours as an auxiliary member at Sarasota Memorial hospital. For twenty years she enjoyed her time working the information desk in the surgery department. She considered it an honor to work with the staff of the hospital and help families at their time of need. Alice's love of helping others was also demonstrated by the many committees and boards she belonged or was elected too. Her passion for children's advocacy lead her to volunteer as a Guardian ad Litem volunteer for over ten years. She also spent time trying to improve mental health resources in the community. Alice was a successful business owner. Along with her husband she owned and operated the "Lad n' Lassie" and "Corset Shop" in Southgate. For over twenty years Alice took pride in helping breast care survivors with proper fitting undergarments and prosthetics. Decades later adults would tell her that they remembered shopping at Lad n' Lassie as a child with their family. Alice was also a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church. Alice felt home here and mentioned often how much she loved her church family. Alice was a great animal lover. She had a special place in her heart for cats and dogs. Most of them were rescues before being adopted into the family. Alice is survived and will be missed by her son Dr. John (Eunice) Penington of Ormond Beach, FL. Grandsons John Patrick of Orlando, FL., Matthew of Boulder, Colorado and granddaughter Christine Penington of New York City. We will miss her delicious cooking that was always served at a beautifully set table, her wonderful sense of humor, great advice, her elaborate Christmas decorations, sharing her unlimited chocolate candy supply, her love and so much more. Any donations to honor Alice can be made to First United Methodist Church of Sarasota or a charity of your choice. A private family service will be held in her honor. A special thank you to her caregivers at Sunnyside Village and to Joyce Johnson for all the visits.
