Barbara J. Riley Scarlett

Barbara was born on March 4, 1930 in Dayton, Ohio and went to heaven on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at age 91. Barbara was surrounded by her family at the end. Barbara had two brothers, Byron and John Barstow and a sister, Martha (Barstow) Hillmyer, all of whom had pre-deceased her. Barbara was married to John (Jack) Riley in 1952. They had a family of 4 children Kevin Riley (Mary), Tom Riley (Kim), Ann Bradley (Fred) and Robb Riley (Julie). She also leaves a step daughter Karen McFarland (Dale) and a very special niece (another daughter), Marilou Giffin (Dick). Barbara dearly loved her many grandchildren Michael, Matt, Kristin, John, Jennifer, Amanda, Brendan, Collin and Katie. She was also blessed with 11 great- grandchildren, Austin, Anthony, Mackenzie, Courtney, Jack Heinen, Delaney, Camden, Crew, Owen and Jack Kelly. Also a granddaughter Jennifer Riley and a great grandson Graham Riley who had pre-deceased her. Barbara moved to Florida in 1977, and loved Florida life. In the early 80’s Barbara married Laird Scarlett. Together they enjoyed boating, golfing, cross country travel in their motor home and many good times with friends and family. Barbara’s love for travel continued until the age of 88. Her last trip was her annual visit to Ohio to enjoy the fall colors and her family and a trip to Nevada to visit her son and daughter-in-law. Barbara called The Arbors home for almost 20 years. She was involved in many of their clubs and activities. Another highlight in her life was her 90th birthday party. It was attended by over 75 family members and friends. This party brought true joy and happiness to her. Barbara’s children would also like to give special thanks to her niece, Marilou Giffin. Barbara and Marilou had a special bond, and they were very close for their entire lifetime. Whether it was hurricane evacuations or holiday dinners, Marilou always looked out for Barbara’s best interest. The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff of American House of Sarasota, where Barbara resided her final 6 months. The staff was exceptionally kind and provided Barbara with the best care possible. We also would like to offer our thanks to Tidewell Hospice, for their compassion and loving care for her in her final days. There will be a Celebration of Life Mass for Barbara, Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 425 S Tamiami Trail, Osprey Fl. Immediately following the Mass she will be laid to rest in the church’s Memorial Garden.
