Carol Joan Reese

It is with sadness that the Reese family announces the passing of Carol Joan Reese, 87, on June 7, 2022. She was born in 1934 in Springfield, Ohio. After graduating from High School in 1953, she married Everett John (Jan) Reese, Jr. in 1954. They initially lived on the family farm before moving to Florida in 1961. Her 27-year career at The Sarasota Herald-Tribune yielded many friendships, and she was a Florida Newspaper Co-Op Association charter member. With her leadership, management, and organizational abilities, Carol served on numerous committees and boards, including Sigma Beta Pi, Sarasota/Manatee Red Hat Society, Florida Newspaper Co-Op Association, and the Sarasota Area Toast Masters. More recently, she was a resident advocate for Grand Villa Assisted Living and Sarasota Pointe Rehabilitation Center. She maintained once-a-month luncheons with many of her friends from various affiliations until her passing. An avid antique and glass collector and dealer, she enjoyed sharing her extensive knowledge about manufacturers and her significant finds. Her husband was a dedicated gun collector. They intended to make their collections a retirement business. However, they realized while traveling the flea market and antique circuit that buying was more fun than setting up booths and selling. Carol loved socializing, puzzles, crafts, and games. Her love for her family was immense, and she faithfully stood by them. Her kind, loving, and generous heart extended to always having a willing hand to lend. She rode the SCAT public transportation for seven years in her power chair three times a week for dialysis. Despite the resulting exhaustion, she persisted in preserving her mobility and freedom. In late 2021, her gradual decline eventually led to full-time nursing care. Carol is survived by her son Donald, his wife Susan, her son Tom, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, six siblings, and her grandson, Jamie. Her family, friends, and loved ones will miss her dearly. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 3 PM at Toale Brothers Funeral Homes & Crematory – Colonial Chapel. 40 N. Orange Avenue, Sarasota, followed by a reception. Donations to The Pines of Sarasota or the National Kidney Foundation would be appreciated.
