Coyn V. Richardson

Coyn V. Richardson, 91, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, with his soulmate Susan Richardson, by his side. Born in Charleston, Illinois, Coyn was the eldest son of Arthur and Virgene (Mateer) Richardson. From an early age, the business instincts that would define his life were already on display. As a student at Eastern Illinois University, he convinced friends and family to come work for his A&W root beer stand. That blend of Huck Finn persuasiveness and drive never left him. A tireless entrepreneur, Coyn built a remarkable career spanning insurance, medical equipment leasing, nursing homes, and educational software. In the 1980s, he and his longtime business partner Thomas Faller turned their attention to acquiring and reviving community banks in Central and Southern Illinois. In 1993, Coyn acquired People Bank and renamed it Marine Bank, resurrecting a respected local name that had been lost in a merger. He reveled in hiring and motivating great people and celebrating Marine Bank’s rapid growth into the largest locally owned bank in town. Coyn often said he never worked a day in his life, he simply "played in business." His drive and love of opportunity evident to everyone who knew him. Outside of business, Coyn and Susan delighted in traveling and sharing their home in Jamaica with friends and family. He loved building their home overlooking the Gulf on Siesta Key. He loved southern fried chicken made the old-fashioned way - pan-fried not deep fried. He loved his English Mastiffs, Sherman and Sammy. But most of all, he loved Susan — his partner and his companion of thirty years. Coyn is survived by his wife, Susan Richardson; his daughter, Kim Berman (Jeff), and son, Mark Richardson (Donna); his former spouse, Doris Richardson; his stepdaughters, Claire Fitzpatrick (Michael) and Meghan Harper (Ryan); his grandchildren, Ellen, Anna (Stearns), and Lindsay Richardson, and Kathleen and Matthew Berman; his step-grandchildren, Finn and Seamus Fitzpatrick, and Drew, Katie, and Tommy Harper; his great-grandchildren Bennett and Nora; and his brother, Dr. Gail Richardson. A private celebration of life will be held at a later time.
