Derl Brian Smith

Derl B. Smith left us on May 30, 2024. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at Venice Hospital Facility, Fl. It was 5 days before his 91st birthday. He lived a full and active life. He was born in Farmington Township PA. On June 4,1933. His parents were Gordon Smith and Bernice Badmone. He was a graduate of Wellsboro High, Wellsboro PA.in 1951 and Rochester Business Institute (on a scholarship.) While living in Oriskany NY he was employed as Office Manager for Trinkaus Maner for 25 years. He moved to Lowell NY where he married Florence Frank (deceased 3/77). Moved to Ohio for several years then to Florida in 1985. He was employed by Amaco Jobber, as an Accountant. He married Jean Heisler on October 1988 (deceased 2008). For eleven years he worked for H&R Block – two years as an instructor. He went on to start his own business as a Tax Consultant and CPA, retiring in his 80's. He was a known as a kind and caring man to all who knew him. He enjoyed bowling and Florida beaches, always kidding about wanting to be a Beach Bum. He became a Mason where he served as Secretary Treasurer for several years, then Past Master – 32 degree and Shriner. He was proud to be a Masonic Brother. He loved God and attended Church of Hope regularly. He also enjoyed the Saturday morning Men's Breakfast. He enjoyed faithfully trying his luck with Scratch Off and Fantasy Five, sometimes winning a small amount. Derl enjoyed spending time with his beloved friend and neighbor, Marie. They shared dinners, dancing and watching sports. He is survived by one sister, Linda (Bob) Mellen. She loved her brother not only as a friend but as a life long Father figure. He was predeceased by 6 siblings: Ellen Harrington, Perry Smith, Donna Freistedt, Barry Smith, Bonnie Smith and Thomas Smith. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Derl will have a Masonic Memorial Service and a Celebration of Life at Toale's Brother's Funeral Home, 40 North Orange Ave, Sarasota, Fl, on July 6, 2024, at 2:00 PM. Following the service his remains will be laid to rest in Oriskany Cemetery, Oriskany, NY.
