John Buckley, Jr.

We are sad to share that John Buckley, Jr. left this world suddenly. He was loved, probably more than he ever knew, by everyone around him. He was known for his quick wit and intellect. He knew everything there was to know; he was a walking encyclopedia. His family, friends and students will all miss his laugh, smile, and sense of humor. For forty years, he taught thousands of children at Tuttle Elementary, in Sarasota. He retired in June 2005 and immediately began substitute teaching at Riverview and Sarasota High, where the kids actually got his sense of humor. He could hardly go anywhere in Sarasota that he would not run into “one of his kids.” John loved everything about nature and could name every species of bird or butterfly that enjoyed the sanctuary he and his beloved wife, Marvel, created in their yard. He was a wonderful writer, storyteller, and could draw anything. He was inspired by the animals and plants that surrounded him. He bonded with his adult children and grandchildren over sports, old-timey music, and terrible jokes. He cheered on the Gators, drew birthday cards, timed himself on crossword puzzles, and spent time with his wife, 5 children and spouses, 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild whenever he could. He never met a stranger, and learned everything he could about everyone he met. He was loving, giving, funny, smart, and friendly to everyone around him. John Buckley was the best son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather that anyone could wish for. We will remember him long after the birds and beasts come to his window or cross our paths, each time his stories are shared, and when someone wants to say, “Go ask Grandpa!". John is survived by his wife, Marvel Buckley, his children, Danny Ferris, Kip Ferris, Katie Jordan, and Erin Buckley and their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepmother, Marion Buckley. A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm, at the Learning Center Pavillion in the Crowley Nature Center, 16045 Myakka Rd, Sarasota. All who knew and loved John are welcome to attend. We'll be outside; John would tell you that socks are optional but be sure to use sunscreen and wear a hat, so please wear hats in his honor. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made to the Crowley Museum and Nature Center through flanzertrust.org/make-a-donation.
