Mary A. Babcock

Mary lived life to the fullest as she travelled from the mountain tops to the oceans and reefs and everywhere in between. She had both an adventurous spirit as well as an eternally sunny disposition. She was always there with a helping hand to those in need and never knew a stranger. Mary had so many gifts it's difficult to list them all. A special spiritual gift was that of hospitality as she entertained so often and so well, even under trying circumstances at times. Her leadership skills included her unofficial "Mamadore" title at Coral Reef Yacht Club, but she served on many charitable and professional boards to serve those communities she was part of. She also held together the family history as she dearly loved the research required to trace the family roots to America's founding as needed as a Daughter of the American Revolution membership. Mary was a pilot, world-class sailor, Big Game hunter, philanthropist, and above all else a mother- to everyone. Still, she could whip up a set of draperies, paper a wall or reupholster a chair just for fun. Still, all her accomplishments paled to her devotion and care for her family and friends and her greatest legacy will remain the love and memories she's left in all our heats. Mary is survived by her daughter, Areca Whatmore, her son Clifton Whatmore, her sisters Charlotte Leatherman, Susan Coffey, Patricia Macy, her brother Vose Babcock and their families. Her spark of fun prompted her to claim a new role after the birth of her first great granddaughter, saying "just call me Great!"! Services and a reception to both be held on Tuesday, Nov 5 at 11:30am, Church of the Redeemer, Sarasota, 222 S Palm Ave (please vote for early). Burial on November 6th in Miami at 12:30pm, Caballero Rivero Woodlawn North, 3260 SW 8th Street Miami, Fl 33135 and a Celebration of life, 1:30 to 5pm OR immediately following burial, Riviera Country Club, 1155 Blue Rd., Coral Gables, 33146. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Mary’s legacy by making a donation to Common Hope, (www.commonhope.org/getinvolved/sponsorship) an organization dedicated to supporting Student Sponsorships in underprivileged communities in Guatemala—a cause that Mary passionately supported for many years. She encouraged her grandchildren to participate and continue this work, and she would ask that you consider doing the same.
